James Hall, Ripples Wellbeing

After facing up to his own mental health challenges, James Hall now helps others deal with theirs. James talks to The Industry Leaders about how he approaches his work and tells us about his hopes for the industry.

How did you end up sitting where you are today?

Life experience and my own personal journey have led me to this place. I have used my times of despair and darkness to allow me to learn about myself.

What kind of work does your role involve?

I am an integrative counsellor based in Bristol, UK. Put simply, rather than applying a "one size fits all" approach, I use a combination of therapies tailored for each individual's needs. I offer individual therapy for adults in the field of Mental Health.

What gets you excited about your industry?

Quite simply, the impact counselling can have on people's lives. I am extremely passionate to make a difference to people to enable them to reach their own full potential.

What's the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Always have a vision and dream.

Where there is chaos, there is opportunity.

Never give up and learn to accept yourself and that good is good enough.

What, or who inspires you?

I have many inspirational figures in my life (some of whom are no longer with us). Some of these are teachers, tutors, my supervisor and my amazing family.

If I am to look at what's been my biggest motivator - I would say my own shadow (the dark side of me that caused me to be in a place I hope never to return to). This provided me with fuel to seek opportunity and growth.

How do you keep up to speed with what's happening in your industry?

Through newsletters, networking, shared experiences and regular CPD. The day I stop learning is the day I stop doing this.

What was the most challenging project or situation you've overcome?

I have had many challenges along the way, including health scares and other setbacks. Making the transition from my previous well paid 'day job' to launching my own business and all of the unknowns (especially in the middle of a global pandemic) was definitely a very challenging situation.

You finish work today and step outside the office to find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?

I would definitely help my closest friends and family, then I would build a new state of the art rugby club.

After that, I would use the money to create my dream and build a retreat!

How do you switch off after a day at work?

Spending time with my family. Cycling (when I can), coaching children at rugby and seeing loved ones (when of course, we are allowed to!)

If you had one wish for the future of your industry, what would it be?

More people believe and trust in the power of talking therapy. There is a massive amount of stigma still associated with Mental Health, which discourages people from opening up.

What book or podcast should everyone know about?

I am not a massive fan of reading, if I am completely honest. But if there was one book I could recommend, it is 'The Little Big Things'. This brings things into perspectives and is an inspirational read.

How should people connect with you?
