UAE-based Sankar Viswanath is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Swiss Corporation for Design & Technology. Sankar took some time out from managing his team to tell us what caused him to lose three days of sleep and how he unwinds after a day at work.
How did you end up sitting where you are today?
We started the company as two partners to promote quality products from Switzerland that stand by our vision to offer quality and be ahead of the design curve. Humble beginnings led us to where we are today to be an industry leader in what we represent and offer.
What kind of work does your role involve?
Constantly thinking out of the box to innovate and make us as efficient, this keeps the interest of the company and the customer.
I spend my time looking after the team and motivating them to perform the best.
What gets you excited about your industry?
The industry is always evolving and constantly changing to adapt to the needs of the design trend, which makes it such a beautiful canvas to keep watching and learning.
What's the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Avoid clutter in your life and keep it simple. This is the best way to stay grounded and focused on things that matter the most.
What, or who inspires you?
It's difficult to pen one person... I always believe life is a constant L board, and every person with who we cross paths has something to offer us, to influence and learn from.
My parents have always inspired me, especially my DAD, who taught me to always be calm however rough the sea may be and keep smiling and keep reaching out to help others.
How do you keep up to speed with what's happening in your industry?
Keeping an open mind to learn and meeting people to share ideas and views of the industry is how I keep up to speed.
What was the most challenging project or situation you've overcome?
After over two decades in the industry, there have been a few! Dubai Airport Gate A21 was a lovely project, and we spent three days with no sleep to complete the project despite so many challenges. The end result all makes it worth it.
You finish work today and step outside the office to find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?
We are all in this world to secure our family for the future. These winnings will sure make a difference in a big way!
It would make a huge change in securing the future, but I don't think I would change my passion for working and what I am doing - that's what makes my day interesting.
How do you switch off after a day at work?
I have always believed in not taking work home, both physically and mentally. When I reach home, I spend time with my family and enjoying my hobbies. I love animals, and watching documentaries helps me unwind and switch off after a day at work.
If you had one wish for the future of your industry, what would it be?
I wish clients would be more realistic in timelines and expectations. We are constantly challenged with timelines due to poor planning and missing milestones on the project.
