Firstly, many people fear the words 'personal brand' as it means going public with your thoughts. I want to know if you have always found it easy to 'put yourself out there'?
I still have reservations about being fully vulnerable and authentic, as my sentiments could possibly be misconstrued. However, I realize the importance of sharing my stories to inspire others, and I have been more courageous in putting myself out there while being fearless with my choice of words. Being genuine and transparent about my thoughts and lived experiences creates a deeper connection with others. I understand that there may be potential misunderstandings or negative judgments, but the potential impact of my words outweighs those concerns. I hope to contribute to a more meaningful and open dialogue that encourages personal growth and empowerment for both myself and those who resonate with my stories.
When it comes to building an authentic personal brand, what advice would you give professionals starting out?
1. Define your purpose: Reflect on your values, passions, and goals. Identify what makes you unique and what you want to be known for. 2. Craft a compelling narrative: Start by writing your own impactful short-form and long-form bio. Describe your background, experiences, and expertise in a way that resonates with your target audience. Highlight your achievements and the value you bring to others. Then consider hiring a personal branding professional or storyteller to refine your narrative. 3. Tailor your message: Adapt your personal brand narrative to different contexts and platforms. Break up your bio into smaller parts that can be used as a pitch or introduction, depending on your environment. 4. Leverage digital platforms: Establish a strong online presence across relevant platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, or industry-specific forums. Consistently share valuable content, insights, and updates related to your field. Engage with your audience, build relationships, and showcase your expertise. 5. Be consistent and authentic: Ensure that your personal brand is aligned with who you truly are. Consistency is key to building trust and credibility. Maintain a cohesive visual identity, including your profile pictures, colors, and typography. Stay true to your values and communicate in an authentic voice. 6. Network strategically: Actively seek opportunities to connect with professionals in your industry. Attend conferences, join industry associations, or participate in online communities. Build relationships with influencers, thought leaders, and potential mentors who can help amplify your personal brand.
Do you think personal branding and reputation go hand in hand, and what can people do to maintain a positive reputation while brand-building?
Personal branding and reputation are closely intertwined. In today's digital age, where information travels quickly and is easily accessible, maintaining a positive reputation is crucial for successful brand-building. A single public mistake or misstep can have significant consequences and tarnish one's personal brand. Being mindful of one's actions and behavior both online and offline is crucial. Individuals should focus on: 1. Developing a clear personal brand identity: Lay a solid foundation that reflects your true values, expertise, and aspirations. 2. Acting with integrity and respect: Engaging in respectful and ethical conduct, treating others with kindness and professionalism, and being mindful of the impact of one's words and actions can significantly contribute to maintaining a positive reputation. 3. Building and nurturing relationships: Actively engaging with your audience, peers, and industry professionals through networking events, social media, and other platforms can help establish credibility and trust. Provide value through sharing knowledge, offering assistance, and participating in relevant conversations. 4. Managing their online presence: Actively curate your social media profiles, ensuring they reflect your personal brand and values. Responding promptly and thoughtfully to feedback and criticism, while addressing any concerns or issues that may arise, demonstrates accountability and a commitment to maintaining a positive reputation. 5. Continuously striving for self-improvement and personal growth: Developing new skills, staying informed about industry trends, and actively seeking feedback can help you stay relevant and respected within your field.
Can you share a success story of how you or someone you follow used their personal brand to build business or career?
By crafting an authentic, compelling, and engaging story that reflects my values and expertise, I have captured the attention and interest of my audience across various channels. I have strategically conveyed my personal brand through various online social media platforms, my website, publications, and speaking opportunities. One of the key elements that have contributed to my success is my active involvement in the community. I make it a priority to attend relevant events multiple times a week and actively participate in non-profit organizations. By immersing myself in these activities, I have established a genuine connection with individuals within my industry and community, fostering trust and building lasting relationships. Rather than approaching my interactions with a transactional mindset, I prioritize building and nurturing meaningful relationships. This approach has not only helped me gain the trust and respect of my clients but has also positioned me as someone who genuinely cares and is committed to delivering exceptional results. By consistently applying my personal brand, I have showcased my expertise, work ethic, credibility, and dedication to my clients. This has resulted in numerous opportunities for professional growth, including collaborations, partnerships, and career advancements.

How do you ensure your personal brand stays true to who you are and your evolving goals?
I prioritize building genuine connections and meaningful relationships by remaining relational rather than transactional, valuing authenticity and transparency in all my interactions. To stay true to myself, I never lose sight of my core values and boundaries guiding my everyday decisions. I understand that personal growth and evolution are integral parts of life, so I continuously reassess my goals and aspirations. This allows me to adapt my personal brand to reflect my changing ambitions and ensure it remains authentic and relevant. I embrace new opportunities and experiences that contribute positively to my personal growth while staying true to my values and principles.

Along your personal branding journey, have you encountered any common obstacles that readers of this interview should be aware of?
Imposter syndrome crept in as I wrote my pitch and updated my bio. I began to question whether I was truly qualified or had accomplished enough to establish a strong personal brand. It was challenging to promote myself without feeling like I was boasting. However, if I didn't share my accomplishments and capabilities, it would be difficult for others to understand what I bring to the table. Overcoming this obstacle required a shift in mindset, acknowledging my achievements, and embracing self-confidence without undermining my own abilities. Imposter syndrome can be a common hurdle along the personal branding journey, but with self-reflection and a positive mindset, it can be overcome.
Imagine you have a time machine that can transport you to the future. What impact do you envision your personal brand having on the world?
I want to encourage others to explore the vast potential of their own stories and dreams. Through the power of connection and collaboration, I envision my personal brand as a source of inspiration for individuals to venture outside their comfort zone and a facilitator of connections that bridge cultural divides.
As the daughter of Vietnamese Boat People, I understand the challenges of feeling disconnected between two cultures. I want to bridge that gap and help individuals like myself navigate their identities and find a sense of belonging. Through my work on the boards of cultural organizations and my involvement in non-profit and private sector projects, I have witnessed the transformative power of honoring one's roots and embracing cultural diversity.
With this in mind, I aim to create a platform called SPACE - a space for learning, alignment, collaboration, and impact. SPACE will serve as a place where people can come together to explore their own histories, connect with others, and foster understanding. I will strive to empower individuals to find their voices and build new tables where diverse perspectives are valued. By encouraging others to embrace their authentic selves and cultural heritage, I hope to inspire a new generation of changemakers who will challenge the status quo and create a more inclusive and interconnected society.
Close your eyes and imagine you're a bestselling author. What captivating book would you write to share your personal brand journey and insights?
My book would be a memoir that takes readers on a journey through the highs and lows of my life. Through storytelling and introspection, I share the significant highlights, challenges, accomplishments, obstacles, wins, and losses that have shaped me into the person I am today. The book would illustrate that the path to success is rarely a linear one. I would candidly recount the pivotal moments when I had to overcome self-doubt, navigate unexpected setbacks, and learn valuable lessons along the way. By sharing these experiences, I aim to inspire readers to persevere in the face of adversity and embrace the inherent unpredictability of their own personal journeys.
