My entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by a passion for branding and a commitment to excellence. I founded PRETEE Creative with a vision to help businesses create brand identities that resonate on a profound emotional level. I've always been a firm believer in the power of empathy and human connection in leadership. These values have not only been integral to my personal philosophy but have also proven to be game-changers in the business world. I came to realize their importance through both observation and experience. In the branding industry, where we're entrusted with the task of shaping a brand's emotional appeal, empathy is non-negotiable. Understanding our clients' vision and their target audience's perspective is the first step in creating a brand that truly resonates. It's about being in their shoes, feeling what they feel, and translating that into a brand identity. As a leader, these values have significantly shaped the way I run my business. At PRETEE Creative, we prioritize a culture of empathy and human connection. We listen carefully, encourage open communication, and ensure that every team member is heard and valued. This approach not only leads to more creative and meaningful branding but also fosters a positive work environment. What's noteworthy is that I have had the privilege of working with the same dedicated team members since the founding of my agency. Of course, I can provide an example of a rebrand where the client was struggling to achieve their desired results. This client was in a highly competitive industry, and despite offering a quality product, their business name, overall identity, and messaging weren't resonating with their target audience. They were experiencing a significant disconnect. Recognizing the importance of empathy and connection, we conducted a thorough audit of their existing branding strategy. We soon realized that the disconnect was due to a lack of emotional resonance in their messaging. While their previous approach had focused on features and benefits, it was lacking the storytelling and emotional depth that underpins meaningful customer relationships. In response, we developed a new branding strategy that focused not only on explaining the benefits and features of the brand but also on crafting stories and messages that evoked the right emotions. We worked collaboratively with the client to redesign their name, color palette, overall brand identity, and messaging to better reflect the passion and purpose behind their business. The impact was profound. The rebrand not only revitalized the brand's image but also rekindled a strong emotional connection with their audience. Customer engagement and loyalty increased significantly, and the business experienced a notable upturn in their bottom line. That's because while people like features and benefits, they fall in love with purpose and passion.


Empathy can often be misunderstood or oversimplified in a business context. How do you define it in your leadership practice, and how do you ensure that it's applied authentically?

In my leadership practice, empathy is at the core of understanding and caring for both my team members and clients. It means actively stepping into their shoes, feeling their emotions, and using that understanding to inform our decisions and actions. Feedback plays a pivotal role, whether it's with my team members or clients, as it's essential for truly comprehending their emotions and needs. When working with clients, I recognize that brand naming can be highly subjective, often rooted in personal preferences. While I provide a strategic framework and guide clients towards the best options, it's vital that they have a deep connection to the final choice. Within my team, transparency is a cornerstone of our interactions. We maintain an environment where open communication thrives, ensuring that I genuinely understand their perspective, and they, in turn, understand mine. This mutual understanding is key to our success.


Connection is not just about understanding others but also connecting with oneself. How do you maintain a balance between personal well-being and fostering connections with your team?

Balancing personal well-being while fostering connections with my team is a crucial aspect of my leadership practice. I believe that a leader's own well-being significantly influences their ability to lead effectively. To maintain this equilibrium, I adhere to a well-rounded self-care routine. This includes regular exercise, reading for personal growth, and ensuring I take breaks and downtime to recharge. Spending quality family time is also an integral part of my routine. Furthermore, I actively delegate tasks and empower team members to take ownership of their roles. This approach not only lightens the workload but also demonstrates my trust in their abilities. It fosters a strong sense of connection and shared responsibility within the team. Open and honest communication is fundamental in our work culture. I encourage my team to discuss their well-being openly, and I lead by example by sharing my own experiences. This practice creates an environment where we can openly address challenges and collaboratively find solutions. Additionally, I embrace flexibility in work arrangements. I avoid setting rigid deadlines unless absolutely necessary, allowing team members to manage their work in a way that best suits their well-being. By valuing both personal well-being and team connections, I aim to lead authentically and create a work environment where my team feels cared for, supported, and motivated to connect with each other.


In terms of scalability, how do you maintain these human-centered values as your business grows? What strategies or tools have you found most effective?

Scaling while staying true to our human-centered values is an exciting challenge. We're keeping it simple: communication and authenticity. We continue to foster a culture where everyone's voice is heard, and we maintain open channels of communication. As for tools, we rely on digital collaboration platforms and project management software to keep us connected, even as our team and client base grow. But the heart of our approach is still people talking to people. While we may not have elaborate training programs, our values are part of our DNA. We hire individuals who already resonate with our human-centered approach, and we lead by example. As we expand, it's all about staying true to who we are and what we stand for, just with a little more to juggle.


For those who are new to leadership or are struggling to build empathy and connection within their teams, what practical advice can you offer? Are there any exercises or habits that can be cultivated?

Effective leadership begins with active listening, where you're fully present in conversations, asking questions to truly understand your team's perspectives. Involving your team members in the decision-making process is equally crucial. This practice not only demonstrates trust but also conveys that you value their expertise. After all, you hired them for their knowledge and skills, not to simply follow instructions. Sharing your human side, including your challenges and failures, is a powerful way to foster a deeper connection with your team. It humanizes your leadership and encourages a culture of openness, where team members feel comfortable sharing their own experiences and concerns. Regular check-ins are essential to monitor team well-being and watch for signs of burnout. These check-ins go beyond work-related discussions; they provide an opportunity for team members to express their thoughts, feelings, and challenges. This proactive approach helps ensure a healthy and supportive work environment where team members feel heard and valued.
