Why Knowing How to Spot AI Is Not Enough for UK Finance Professionals

Finance professionals have become sharp at identifying AI-generated content. But spotting a problem and preventing it are two very different things.
Artificial intelligence has worked its way into the daily routines of UK finance and accountancy professionals faster than almost anyone anticipated. It is being used to draft client communications, process data, structure reports, and handle a growing range of tasks that once demanded significant manual effort. By most measures, adoption in the sector has been swift and decisive.
But a survey from Cloud2Me, the UK's leading hosted desktop provider for accountancy firms, suggests that the speed of that adoption has created a problem that the profession has not yet fully reckoned with. AI is now embedded in daily workflows. The governance frameworks needed to manage it responsibly are not.
Just How Embedded Has AI Become?
The usage figures are striking. According to the survey, conducted among finance and accountancy professionals at a recent Finance, Accounting, and Bookkeeping event, 74% of respondents use AI tools at least several times a week. A full 60% use them every single day.
ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot together account for 55% of usage, and multi-tool approaches are widespread. Professionals are switching between platforms depending on the task, building informal personal workflows around a mix of solutions rather than committing to a single sanctioned tool.
The sector, in other words, is not cautiously dipping its toes in. It is already operating with AI as a core part of how work gets done.
The Wrong Reasons to Pick a Tool
Against that backdrop, one finding from the survey is particularly worth examining. When asked how they selected their primary AI tool, 40% of respondents cited convenience or a peer recommendation as the deciding factor. Not accuracy. Not compliance credentials. Not an assessment of how the tool handles sensitive client data.
In a profession where regulatory precision is not a preference but a requirement, that is a significant gap. Accountancy operates under frameworks that demand auditability, accuracy, and the careful handling of confidential financial information. Choosing a tool because a colleague mentioned it, or because it was already installed on a laptop, does not meet that standard.
A Profession That Has Learned to Read the Signals
One area where the survey findings are genuinely encouraging is detection. UK finance professionals have become notably skilled at identifying AI-generated content, and they describe a consistent set of giveaways.
Overuse of formatting. Random bolding. Excessive structure where a human would write naturally. Generic, coach-like language that does not reflect how a specific client actually communicates. Typographic patterns that feel more algorithmic than personal. As one respondent put it: "You know your clients, and the vocabulary doesn't correlate to the individual."
Accuracy failures feature prominently, too. Respondents recalled instances where AI produced content that conflicted with UK accounting law, presented figures with a confidence that was not backed by any verification, and failed to flag its own errors. One account stood out: a CEO presenting a diagram in which a calendar showed eight days in a week, a mistake that passed unnoticed until it was already in front of an audience.
Some professionals have gone further, using AI detection tools to screen job candidates, assessing whether interview responses reflect genuine thinking or generated text.
Where the Real Risk Sits
The sharpest findings in the survey relate not to accuracy but to data security. Multiple respondents raised concerns about what happens to client information once it is uploaded to an AI platform. Where is it stored? Who can access it? How is it processed?
In several cases, those concerns had already moved beyond the theoretical. One respondent described the outcome in direct terms: "Several staff members had to have disciplinary action over unsafe AI practice. Where is the data we upload going? Where is it stored? Big GDPR problem."
Disciplinary action is not a hypothetical future risk. It is already happening inside UK accountancy practices. And the underlying issue, uploading sensitive client data to platforms without any organisational policy governing how that is done, is not an edge case. It is a pattern.
What the Sector Needs to Address
Helen Brooks, Head of Commercial at Cloud2Me, framed the situation clearly: "These findings reflect a profession that is maturing in its relationship with AI, but maturing unevenly. Finance and accountancy professionals are sharp enough to spot AI-generated content, yet many are still selecting tools based on convenience rather than compliance credentials. In a sector where accuracy and data security are non-negotiable, that gap is a real risk.
The GDPR concerns raised here are not hypothetical; they are already resulting in disciplinary action. The question for practices now is not whether to use AI, but whether they have the governance in place to use it responsibly."
That reframing is important. The debate about whether AI belongs in accountancy is effectively over. The usage data makes that clear. What is not settled is whether firms are taking their obligations regarding that usage seriously.
Detection Is a Baseline, Not a Strategy
Being able to identify AI-generated content is a useful skill. It reflects a profession that is paying attention and developing a working scepticism about the outputs it receives. But it is not a governance framework, and it does not protect a firm from regulatory exposure.
The practices best positioned to use AI responsibly over the long term will be those that move beyond informal detection and individual judgment. They will establish clear policies on which tools are approved for use, how client data may and may not be handled, and how AI outputs are verified before they reach a client or regulator.
The speed of adoption inside UK accountancy has already demonstrated that professionals find real value in these tools. The next step is ensuring that value does not come at the cost of the professional standards on which the sector is built.
