Starting a new job is exciting but highly stressful at the same time. Not only do you need to introduce yourself to lots of new people and learn the ropes, but you also need to look presentable. While this differs for each place of work, there are some things that are universally accepted and will help you feel settled and accepted from day one. Here’s how to properly dress for your first day.
Plan Your Outfit
Make sure to check your new company’s dress code first before putting an outfit together. You could also check the company website and social media pages for inspiration. You may be fine putting on a pair of smart jeans and a relaxed shirt or quarter-zip jumper, or a pair of trousers and a blouse. However, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and choose something a little more formal, especially for the first few weeks. Some jobs may require a suit and tie or a smart dress.
Ensure Your Clothing is Polished
Getting the right attire is one thing, but it must also look good. The clothes should fit properly, not being too tight or too loose, and you must iron out any creases. Make sure to wash anything that has been worn before and use a lint roller to remove any fluff.
Carry Out Necessary Grooming
Keep your hair neat and clean - generally, hairstyles that are out of your face look better. It’s worth having a haircut and/or dyeing a few days before your first day, and investing in hair fibres if you require a touch-up. Keep beards trimmed neatly or consider having a full shave the night before. Keep makeup natural for the first day or two and avoid anything too bold.
Focus On Cleanliness
You want your scent to be noticed by people nearby, but not so overwhelming that it’s off-putting. Use a fragranced soap or body wash as well as a reliable deodorant or anti-perspirant. Apply a lightly scented body lotion or moisturiser. Go light on aftershave and perfume; universally appealing scents include citrus, light florals, aquatic, and light woods.
There is a lot to worry about on your first day at a new job, so you don’t want to be worrying about your outfit. Hopefully, the advice in this post will help you choose an outfit and enhance your overall appearance so that you settle quickly, feel confident walking through the door, and make a strong first impression with your new colleagues.
